NPPA Code of Ethics

1. Be Accurate and Comprehensive

Photojournalists should present images that truthfully represent the scene and avoid misleading viewers.

  • Do not stage or manipulate news photos.

  • Provide accurate captions and context.

  • Avoid oversimplifying complex events.


2. Resist Manipulation

Photojournalists must not alter images in ways that mislead the public.

  • Editing should be limited to standard adjustments (crop, exposure, color balance).

  • Do not add, remove, or move elements in an image.


3. Be Complete and Honest in Captioning

Captions must be accurate and transparent.

  • Clearly identify subjects.

  • Explain what is happening.

  • Avoid assumptions or speculation.


4. Treat Subjects With Respect

Photojournalists should treat all subjects with dignity, especially in sensitive situations.

  • Show compassion for victims of crime or tragedy.

  • Respect privacy when appropriate.

  • Avoid exploiting vulnerable people.


5. Avoid Conflicts of Interest

Maintain independence and credibility.

  • Do not accept gifts or favors that could influence coverage.

  • Avoid situations where personal interests conflict with journalism.


6. Do Not Influence Events

Photojournalists should document events, not alter them.

  • Do not direct subjects in news situations.

  • Avoid interfering with the scene.


7. Be Accountable

Photojournalists must take responsibility for their work.

  • Correct mistakes quickly.

  • Be transparent about how images were made.
